Specific Need
The Friends of the Fort Riley Museums organization was created to support and promote the Museums of Fort Riley.
The Fort Riley Museums tell the story of the U.S. Army’s first permanent cavalry post and the distinguished 1st Infantry Division, also known as “The Big Red One.” The exhibits chronicle America’s military evolution—from the frontier days to the world wars and beyond—and provide a vital context for understanding our nation’s defense history. The Custer House, in particular, offers visitors a rare glimpse into mid-19th-century military life, enriching the historical experience in a way no textbook can.
Beyond their historical value, these museums serve critical functions today. They offer educational programming for students, serve as a source of pride and identity for the soldiers and families of Fort Riley, and help connect the Army with the broader public. Additionally, the museums contribute to the local economy, drawing thousands of visitors annually to Junction City and the surrounding area. The Friends of the Fort Riley Museum appreciates and needs support to maintain and improve the historic programs, exhibits and structures that the US army cannot underwrite at this time.
